If you attend a church which suits your music style, teaching style, lifestyle and theology beliefs…. is that submission?  Take it how and where you want to…

  1. Hey Deb,

Well, what Papa and CK said. Plus, I personally don’t know of a church that “suits me.” That is, I would run things differently than any of the churches I’ve seen. And they each run things differently from each other. I think being a brother within any church body will always require me to submit to (respect) the authority and theology of their doctrine/senior pastor/leader.

  2. CK, thank you for this, it is actually very timely, as all things are with this great God of ours. It is actually an answer to a day long prayer.

“Christ first, Christ alone, Christ forever is the authority I submit to in everything. Everything gets measured by His authority.”

  3. I will bite..But only in the way I know how.

First and foremost our submission is to Christ. His Word is our authority.

As for choosing a church…Do they have the right to order worship and teaching how they see fit? Yes. If our first authority is to Christ we will test any worship or teaching from the church with our own study of God’s Word. We must not sit idle and be subject to just the teaching of said church.

Romans 12:1-2 says we are to be sacrifices in view of God’s mercy. In lite of that mercy we are to test and approve His will.

For me that means diligent study of His word, that way I can measure the teaching of a church against scripture.

For me if the church’s focus is on Christ and His Word, I willing submit to their form of worship. If not I have the right to call their teaching into question. Christ gives me that freedom.

All that to say. Yes it is submission to their form of worship and how the church is run, but for me at least it is not submission to the church’s worship style and teaching alone. I am free in Christ to worship and study His word however he leads me to.

Again no church has the only authority over correct worship and teaching. That is God’s authority through his word. Submit to that, and if the church you attend does the same, well then see above 3rd paragraph about the church’s rite to organize as they see fit.

Christ first, Christ alone, Christ forever is the authority I submit to in everything. Everything gets measured by His authority.

    Peace and love sis.

  4. I have been going to church for over 60 years (not quite your age – 🙂 ) – The music has changed, teaching methods have changed, personal convictions have changed, “church rules” have changed, even the web has had an impact – but the Bible and the theology has not changed. I don’t think that submission lies in those style issues, it lies in understanding God’s word and what He requires for us to do. And yet, we need to be studying God’s Word and searching daily for His direction for our lives – to me that requires submission to Him.
