My Security

Ephesians 1:11-14 “11In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.”

I love this scripture.  It tells me that one of God’s greatest desires for His people is that they feel secure in His love and power.  Everything else in our lives can be unstable… our health, our family, our jobs, education, friends, society, world…. but we know as believers that when we swore our allegiance to Christ, we didn’t sign on for a vacation.  Paul describes it as tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril and sword.. sheep to be slaughtered.  (Romans 8:35-36)  He goes into his own biography in 2 Corinthians 11:25-28…. quite eye opening.  Yet this man, who so frequently was subjected to danger, and opposed at every turn, avoided having a nervous breakdown.  Not only that, but he was stable and powerful in his soul.  I am convinced that his stability and power came from realizing that God desires us to be secure in His love and power, regardless of circumstances around us.

There are passages in His Word that can make us a bit shaky and rob us of our security:

Romans 11:20-21 “20Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but be afraid. 21For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.”

2 Corinthians 13:5 “5Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?” and many others.

These kind of passages teach that the test of genuineness for the Christian is perseverance in faith and holiness of life.  I don’t believe they were written to threaten our security in God, they are to threaten our security in everything but God.  Is your security in your health?  The Bible will be a threat to you…. How about your family, job, money, education… (fill in the blank)  The Bible will be a threat to you.  It is in this threatening of these inadequate foundations of security and the Bible brings us back lovingly to the one and only eternal unshakable foundation….. Christ.

On one hand God demands us to turn from sin or we will die,  yet on the other hand when we feel eternally secure in His love, you will live….  When our feelings of security are threatened in this world, it is only to get us to see the security we do have in His love and His power.  It has but one message which is, to seek security in Him alone.
